Ljubljana Frogs: Stepping Into a New Competitive Stage as IFAF Releases 2025 World Rankings
A Year of Significant Change for Flag Football
The 2025 IFAF world rankings shine a light on a sport expanding faster than ever. Mexico marked a historic moment by stepping into the #1 place in the women’s ranking, ending the long-standing hold of the USA.
In the men’s division, the USA remains at the top while new nations move closer, adding extra intensity and tactical variety to the global field.
This update reflects a season that featured 101 national teams across continental events – an increase of nearly half compared to 2022. Nations from Africa, Asia, Oceania, Europe, and the Americas all contributed to a competitive environment that grows with every tournament.
What This Means for Slovenia and the Ljubljana Frogs
Slovenia’s women now stand at #33, while the men hold #38 – an important position for a country that is still developing its national program and building experience against stronger opponents.
For the Ljubljana Frogs, this context is more than background information. It sets the level the club is working toward and defines where Slovenian players need to be to compete with the best.
• International tournaments are no longer optional
Competing beyond domestic borders has become the essential path for teams that want to contribute to national progress and give their players a realistic test against top European and world programs.
• Player development now demands international exposure
Facing Italy, Austria, Spain, Great Britain, Japan, and Brazil gives Slovenian athletes insights that cannot be replicated locally. Every international snap helps players read faster, adjust quicker, and understand how small details decide close games.
• Clubs carry national responsibility
With flag football heading to the Olympic Games in Los Angeles 2028, clubs must prepare players for a much higher standard. The Frogs’ long-term goal – to serve as an extended foundation for the Slovenian national team – fits this direction and turns every practice and tournament into part of a bigger story.
