FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Who can join Ljubljana Frogs?
Ljubljana Frogs is a men's club and we train players aged 16 and over — no previous flag football experience needed. If you are a woman who wants to play, our friends at Domžale Tigers run a women's programme and we will happily point you their way. If you are under 16, you can train and play soccer at the same venue in Dobrova until you are old enough to join us.
What kind of athletes are you looking for?
Flag football is a unique blend of skills from many sports. We see former basketball players, hockey goalkeepers, sprinters, handball players, and track athletes thrive on the field. Don't underestimate the intensity: competitive flag football can mean up to 40 sprints per game, 4 games per day, and 8 games per tournament weekend. It demands speed, agility, game sense, and endurance — if you have an athletic background and a competitive mindset, you'll fit right in.
How much does it cost to join?
Your first week of training is free — a full week, not one session stretched over three. If you only drop in occasionally instead, it is 10 € per training. Each season you pay 50 € (club membership plus championship licence). Billing starts in September, so the mid-August start of the season is not charged — and neither is November, the free month with no club training. Training then costs 40 € per month if you live within 30 km of the training ground in Šujica, Dobrova; travel from further out and training is free — the commute is your contribution. The fee is paid in advance — by the 15th, for the month that follows — with an attendance reward measured against the 8 mandatory trainings in a month: attend all 8 and you pay 0 € the next month, at least 6 means 10 €, two means 30 €. If you get injured you keep paying to hold your spot on the roster, otherwise it goes to someone else; while you recover you can still use the practice facilities for alternative training, or come along to sessions and follow what is happening so you keep learning the game. You arrange and pay for your own sports medical exam (about 80 €) before you start playing. You can have the exam done at any Medicina dela in športa (occupational and sports medicine) clinic in Slovenia. Once you have completed a full season and attended every tournament, the club covers your medical exams from then on. Optional personalised gear is 240 €.
When is the training season?
The season runs from mid-August to the end of June. We are outdoors from mid-August through October and again from March to June; December to February moves indoors. November is a free month with no club training — everyone trains at a gym of their own choosing. In the outdoor months the week is Monday and Wednesday at 18:00 (flag football, mandatory), Tuesday at 18:00 (sprinting) and Thursday at 18:00 (technical), both optional. Through the winter the mandatory days change month by month: December adds one indoor practice with Wednesday mandatory; January and February are gym plus two indoor practices with Monday and Wednesday mandatory; March is back outdoors with gym and sprints, and Monday, Wednesday and Thursday mandatory. Head coach is Aleš Zakšek.
Do I need to buy equipment?
The training fee covers sessions plus rental of shirts, shorts and game jerseys (returned at the end of the season). Cleats and gloves you buy yourself — we no longer lend cleats. The club supplies flags and balls, which stay club property. Always bring your own water. Optional personalised gear is 240 €; after three seasons you get a jersey with your surname, and after more than three years with the club you receive a free club gear package.
Where do you train?
At Nogometno igrišče Dobrova in Šujica, Dobrova pri Ljubljani (ŠD Dobrova). Monday and Wednesday at 18:00 are flag football and mandatory. Tuesday at 18:00 is a sprinting session and Thursday at 18:00 is technical training — both optional. Saturday is by arrangement when there are no games.
What is the difference between the domestic and international squad?
We run one senior domestic team and one international team. The domestic team plays the Austrian championship pathway and trains weekly in Ljubljana; the international team represents the Frogs at elite European tournaments. They are not separate clubs — playing domestic is the normal route in, and it is considerably easier to earn an international place once you are already playing for the domestic side.
What rules and format do you play?
We compete in IFAF 5-on-5 flag football — the same non-contact, Olympic format used worldwide. Games are fast, skill-based, and safe: defenders pull flags instead of tackling, and contact is not allowed. You can read the official rules here: Official IFAF Flag Football Rules (2023).
Is flag football an Olympic sport?
Yes. Flag football will make its Olympic debut at the Los Angeles 2028 Summer Olympics, featuring men's and women's 5-on-5 competitions. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) approved the sport in October 2023, recognising its global growth, accessibility, and appeal to new audiences. The Olympic format follows IFAF rules — the same format we train and compete in every week at Ljubljana Frogs.
Does Slovenia have a national flag football team?
Yes. Slovenia has national flag football teams that compete in European and international tournaments sanctioned by IFAF Europe. The national programme draws players from clubs across the country, and several Ljubljana Frogs players have represented Slovenia at the international level. Playing club flag football is the pathway to national team selection.
What language do you train in?
Training runs in Slovene and English. A large part of the squad is international, including Erasmus students, so you do not need any Slovene to train, play or follow the calls.
What do I need for my first training?
Just turn up at 18:00 on any training day — no appointment, no application needed first. Bring a white t-shirt, shorts without pockets, a bottle of water and cleats (we no longer lend cleats). That is it. Your first week is free.
Do I need insurance?
Travel insurance is mandatory for everyone who travels with the team. For dedicated sports cover — for example the Specialisti policies from Vzajemna or Merkur — call our sponsor Krznami d.o.o.: Žiga Kržič on +386 41 882 781. They will tell you exactly what you need and how to arrange it.
