Is Flag Football the sport of the future? Flag football is quickly becoming more and more popular all over the world. In the United States, Flag football ranks second in the number of players in versions of American football. According to the International Football Association (IFAF), flag football is currently played in 50 countries around the world. Despite being significantly slower than classic American football, more and more people are opting for this new sport. In the past year, the number of flag football participants can be compared to the number of participants in American football. The International Federation of American Football reported that in 2011 there were 4.5 million participants in American football and 2.9 million active flag football players. When we look at statistics like for example, average player's speed or active participants compared to other sports, flag football is not included in the list. The only way to find out how many players play a particular type of football is through an organization that works for that sports association. For example, we need to look for rugby statistics at the World Rugby Association How much will flag football gain in visibility? Will it be just a few players or will the sport become more widespread? With the advances coming into the world of flag football, we believe the game will soon catch up and even surpass American football in participation. Flag football is rapidly increasing the number of players and we are looking for new members every year. We need more players to join and enjoy the sport and build visibility, but we also need coaches to be able to allow athletes to learn new skills and progress as players on their team. How can more people get involved? Although flag football is becoming increasingly recognizable, there are still a lot of people who haven’t heard anything about it or only see pictures of players holding the NFL trophy.
